2009 May 21: One way to get a film clip without violating copyright is to find the largest screen TV you can, set up a digital camera on a tripod, turn off the lights, turn up the volume, and film the segment you want to use in your presentation. Then download segment to your computer, edit in Windows Movie Maker, insert into PowerPoint.
2009 May 17: I'm home tonight and available for questions via IM. Need to find one more source? Need help citing something? Use the chat box above. (Not available or even visible when on Bullis network.)
2009 May 12: I have consolidated my examples and search tips at the top of the list of Subscription Databases instead of sprinkling them throughout -- please take a minute to review them.

Subscription Databases

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Set up a folder for downloading articles as you find them.
Some sample searches for the databases:
(review OR movie) AND "tora, tora, tora"
(jfk OR "president kennedy") AND assassination
"cinderella man" OR braddock
"frank lucas" AND (drug* OR gang* OR heroin)
"ron kovic"
"malcolm x"
war AND (iraq OR gulf)
"cuban missile crisis"
"medgar evers"
homosexual*
suburb*
vet* AND "vietnam war"
you must put AND between words/phrases
use OR and parentheses for synonyms or related concepts
quotation marks force search on phrase, not two independent words
asterisk allows for search on word root and will return all forms

You can also search for an analysis of your film here:

JSTOR
ANALYSIS: We very fortunate to have this database of articles from academic journals for a one-week trial. You will each need to create a user name and password.

For the passwords to the various databases, please go to Mrs. Lowry's website.

Websites

When searching for primary sources, limit your Google search to specific domains. In front of your search terms, add the following text:

site:edu    site:gov    site:mil

Some examples:

site:mil "black hawk down"
site:mil jarhead AND movie
site:edu "boys don't cry"
site:edu pleasantville

Internet Movie Database

NetFlix

History in the Movies
(Professor Shultz, University of St. Francis)
History in Film
(privately maintained by John Woggon)
The Movies, Race, and Ethnicity

Reel American History

And finally this, from Wikipedia's entry on itself, "Wikipedia: About":

"Visitors do not need specialized qualifications to contribute... Because Wikipedia is an ongoing work to which, in principle, anybody can contribute, it differs from a paper-based reference source in important ways. In particular, ...newer articles more frequently contain significant misinformation, unencyclopedic content, or vandalism. Users need to be aware of this to obtain valid information and avoid misinformation that has been recently added and not yet removed..." [emphasis is added]
